At twenty, Allison Heller has already used up the lower forty-eight states. Alone in the fishing village of Vladimir, Alaska, she crews on salmon boats, hoping to reinvent herself amidst the desolate beauty of the North. Allie encounters Sonny, a Tlinget Indian trapped in his own dreams; Nick, a fisherman haunted by the wife he abandoned in his native Russia; and Vivian, Sonny's mother, who has lost her husband to the sea. Allie's presence becomes a catalyst in the lives of these characters, leading to both destruction and reconciliation.
